Matthew Lopez, co-writer and director of last year's hit gay rom-com Red, White, and Royal Blue, announced last week that there will be a Red, White, and Royal Blue 2!
Prime Experience was held this year in Los Angeles and connected some devoted fans with their favorite casts and stories from hit Amazon Prime series and films. Among this crowd was the highly adored cast of Red, White, & Royal Blue. After a screening of their film on May 9, the cast and crew joined interviewer, Gerrad Hall, on stage for a Q&A. Nicholas Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Uma Thurman, Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, producer Sarah Schechter, Lopez, and author Casey McQuiston all attended the after-movie discussion, and talks soon got interesting.
The cast shared some memorable moments from being on set. Galitzine discussed the scene in which his character hid in the closet, stating that it added a new perspective to the performances and actors he knew. His inability to watch the actors perform their roles made his attention focus on their delivery and vocal control. He praised them for their talent.
When asked a teasing question about the copious amount of kissing the men do in the film, Perez revealed that, before every kissing scene, the pair would chew on some mints that were on-hand on set. Both men also gave credit to their intimacy coordinator Robbie Taylor Hunt.
As the panel came to a close, Hall asked Lopez directly if there is going to be a sequel, to which the director confirmed a Red, White, & Royal Blue sequel is indeed currently in the works. McQuiston, the author of the book, added that she and Matthew Lopez are currently writing the script together.
Given that the film is presently in the earliest of production stages, not much is known about the plot, returning cast, or release date. That being said, Galitzine and Perez both confirmed their return to the project, a fact that Perez later confirmed again on his instagram with some sweet pictures from the event and cast reunion.
When questioned on what they’d like to see or do in the sequel, Perez joked, “Another cake scene,” a reference to the cake fight sequence that played out in the first film. Casey joked, “I don’t think Matthew can go through that much buttercream again.”
Matthew ended the Q&A on a heartwarming note, stating, “At the end of the day, what I think what made this film what it was is is we made it with a lot of love for the book and a lot of care.” He later added that, in terms of a sequel, “It will be made with the same attention and love.”
Following the event, the official Red, White, & Royal Blue movie instagram account made it official with cheeky teaser poster:
