New Details on 'Freaky Friday 2' As It Begins Production!

Just over 20 years after its initial release, production has begun on the sequel to the classic Disney comedy Freaky Friday, aptly named Freaky Friday 2. OG leads Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are set to reprise their original roles after several years of talks and teases alluding to the project. 

It seems as if we have Curtis to thank for the conception of this sequel in the first place. Over the years, she’s often alluded to the possibility of a sequel, and she ramped it up post-pandemic. In October of 2022, she took advantage of her time on "The View" to talk about her ideal sequel, chock-full of sexy grandmas and returning cast members.

It seems that her dreams have come to fruition. According to a casting call shared by CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment), Lohan will play a grown-up Anna Coleman with a 14-year old daughter, Harper, who strictly opposes her mother’s marriage to British restaurateur Eric Davies. Conveniently enough, Davies comes with his own 14-year-old daughter, Lily, who quickly finds herself at odds with Harper. We don’t know exactly where this is going, but surely we know there are a lot more bodies in the mix this time around. Perhaps there will be more than one body swap. Maybe every character will find themselves in the wrong body — a hurricane of mix-ups!

Although fans have rejoiced about the two stars reprising their lead roles, many more actors are returning to film the project. Among them are Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Hayley Hudson, Christina Vidal, Stephen Tobowlsky, Rosalind Chao, and Lucille Soong. The film will also feature fresh faces Maitreyi Ramakrishnan ("Never Have I Ever", Turning Red) and Manny Jacinto ("The Good Place", "The Acolyte"). Nisha Ganatra is set to direct the project, which was confirmed in the process of shooting on June 24. The film is set to be released sometime in 2025 by Disney. 

The project finally starting to shoot is a miracle, as the talks surrounding it have been ensuing for years. After Curtis’s comments on "The View", though, the ball kept rolling. Lohan was asked about the topic soon after on "The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon", where she claimed that she and Curtis would both be up for it. Several months later, on March 29, 2024, Curtis confirmed the project’s existence with a selfie with Lohan and tagging Disney. Soon after, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed what we already knew (and hoped) to be true. 

Now, fans can relish in the first on-set photo of Curtis in Lohan, fittingly in front of each other’s trailers with trademark poses of their opposite on-screen characters. We can’t wait. And hopefully, we won’t have to for very long!
