This past week has been a whirlwind for my fellow Star Wars fans. First we got to see an incredible trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens featuring our favorite dynamic duo, Chewy and Han Solo, then we got to see endless pictures of fabulous cosplay, and now there’s this grand news: In December 2016, another Star Wars movie will be released!
At the Star Wars Celebration held this past weekend in Anaheim, CA, a panel revealed that there will be a spin-off Star Wars film, Star Wars: Rogue One, which will take place between Episodes III and IV and will follow a group of outlaw resistance fighters who band together to steal the plans for the Death Star. The film will star The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones as a rogue soldier (is she the rogue one? Only time will tell...) and will be directed by Gareth Edwards. Edwards has mentioned that the film will be more "realistic" than previous Star Wars films, as several members of the crew have worked on war films including Zero Dark Thirty and Saving Private Ryan.
A teaser trailer for the film was shown during the panel (yet to be officially released by the studio), and in it, we learn that the film is set in an “era without jedis”, as Obi-Wan reminds us that jedis are the guardians of peace, and that the Death Star is featured prominently. Star Wars: Rogue One is part of the “Anthology” series of Star Wars films, which means that it is a stand-alone film that is not connected to the original episodic series.
There is one outside source that could give us some hints on Star Wars: Rogue One. “Star Wars Rebels”, the spunky animated series that is shown on Disney XD, takes place during the same time as Star Wars: Rogue One. Perhaps a few characters from “Star Wars Rebels” will pop up in the new movie?
Are you excited for Star Wars: Rogue One?
