Nearly 20 years since the Declaration of Independence was stolen from the National Archives, and it seems that that was only the tip of the iceberg. Bringing us back to those treasure-hunting days is the new "National Treasure" series, "Edge of History" on Disney+! This is an exciting world to come back to. Just like the Star Wars movies that are now being passed down to new generations, it appears National Treasure will begin to do the same.
A third National Treasure film has been in the works for many years and is scheduled for a release in 2024, but for now it looks like Disney is going to pump as much as they can into the franchise. Originally starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, and Justin Bartha and directed by Jon Turteltaub, the story focused on a historian who races to find a Templar Treasure before a team of mercenaries find it for their own machinations. The series lived in the hearts of many fans for years. Although not critically acclaimed, they performed well at the box office and settled in the hearts of many fans.
The new series is not exactly a direct spin-off of the original movies, although it does take place within the same universe. Lisette Olivera makes her debut in the franchise as 20-year-old Jess Valenzuela, seeking to find the secrets of her family's past secrets - much like Ben Gates in the original film. "Edge of History" drops the Founding Fathers for more relevant topics of indigenous history and the aftermath of colonialism. The story leans more toward a young adult audience to appeal to a new generation.
Those along for the ride to help guide her on her mission include a group of friends as well as the return of Justin Bartha as Riley Poole. Also returning is Harvey Keitel as Peter Sadusky, the agent hounding Ben Gates in the first two movies. Making her debut in the franchise is Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie. It doesn't appear that Cage is going to be in this season, but his presence may be felt with the nostalgia of treasure-hunting.
