Looking for a good date movie this weekend, or a good stay-in movie just for you? Take a look at the delightful romantic comedy Laggies, available to stream on Netflix now!
In Laggies, Keira Knightley’s Megan has spent her life just cruising through, either with the support of her parents, especially her dad (Jeff Garlin), or her high school sweetheart, Anthony (Mark Webber). But when her boyfriend proposes to her at her high school friend’s wedding, she is thrown for a loop. Now she actually has to make a decision about her life. Megan begins to question everything she knows, and whether she wants any of it. She decides to take a literal break from everything to figure it out, telling her fiancé and parents that she is off at a work retreat.
Instead, she is staying at the house of a teenage girl who she kindly bought alcohol for and befriended, Annika (Chloe Grace Moretz). Megan gets along great with Annika and her friends, and soon realizes she’s still stuck in her high school mindset and needs to grow up. Enter Annika’s dad, Craig, played by the wonderful Sam Rockwell. If you have seen other romantic comedies, it’s easy to guess where this goes, but I’ll just let you watch and see!
The film came out in 2014, and it’s hard to understand why it didn’t get more attention. Knightley is as charming as ever, and brings to life a story that, at first glance, might not seem that interesting. With such an amazing cast that includes Ellie Kemper as Megan’s old high school friend, and this year’s breakout Kaitlyn Dever in an earlier role, Laggies is a smart and cute hidden gem.
Check out Laggies on Netflix if you like movies like Lady Bird, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Begin Again, also starring Keira Knightley!
