It’s officially official: "Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist" is coming back for Season 2.
Thanks to COVID-19, the decision to renew NBC’s hit musical series came a bit slower than we would have liked, but better late than never, right? And it is some much needed good news. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” has become a source of joy, healing, and, of course, music. There’s no doubt that the team behind it will come up with even more incredible stories to tell in Season 2, all scored by some incredible music.
That said, we obviously can’t help but come up with our own ideas. So, here are 7 songs that would make “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” an extra extraordinary playlist!
1. "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals
One of the biggest musical numbers of the first season of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was “I’ve Got The Music In Me”. It makes sense, considering Zoey literally has the music in her. So, in Season 2, why not continue the joke? “You Get What You Give” from the New Radicals would be the perfect group number for Season 2. Granted, the song is more about youths rising up, but it’s more so about staying hopeful and pushing forward.
“Don’t give up, you’ve got the music in you” feels like something Zoey might just need a reminder of here and there.
2. "Why Can’t I?" by Liz Phair
Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” is one of the best love songs of all time, and I’ll happily fight anyone who says differently. Ironically enough, it’s about cheating. Now, who could that remind us of in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”? To be fair, Simon is available now, so he’s not flirting with the cheating line so much anymore. But given how things turned out with Max, it’s possible that Zoey could be the one struggling with fidelity this season.
Really, “Why Can’t I?” is kind of the perfect song to sum up Zoey and Simon’s relationship.
3. "Can’t Fight The Moonlight" by LeAnn Rimes
Jane Levy, who brings Zoey to life, has already noted that she’d love to see more country music in Season 2. She revealed on Variety’s podcast “The Big Ticket” that she’d particularly like to see a Bonnie Raitt cover in Season 2.
While we’re talking country artists, though, why don’t we throw LeAnn Rimes into the mix? Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Max or Simon sing this one. Considering how hard Zoey has fought her feelings for both of them – you know, she’s tried to resist, tried to hide from their kiss – it would be the perfect love song for either of them to bust out on a walk home with Zoey.
4. "I’ll Be There For You" by The Rembrandts
Most people think of The Rembrandts’ hit “I’ll Be There For You” solely as the theme song to NBC’s most iconic TV show, “Friends”. But it’s actually a great song in its own right, and would be seriously fitting for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”. After all, Zoey’s just lost her dad. She’s going to need all the support she can get, and, luckily, she’s got a strong team lined up. Max, Simon, Joan – they’ll all be there for Zoey when the rain starts to pour.
Let any one of them sing it or make it a trio, it’ll work no matter what. And it’d make for a cute NBC easter egg.
5. "Vienna" by Billy Joel
Sadly, Zoey’s father lost his battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in the season one finale of “Zoey’s”. But let’s be honest, you can’t just not use the talent that is Peter Gallagher. Obviously, he can’t be in every episode, but there’s certainly a case to be made for his returning in Zoey’s dreams. And in those dreams, it’d be awful nice to see him tackle Billy Joel’s “Vienna.”
The song is all about taking things at your own pace, and how it’s okay to slow down, even pause if you need to. It’s exactly the kind of fatherly advice Zoey might need, considering how hard she works.
6. "You’ll Be Okay" by A Great Big World
Losing her father is undoubtedly going to rock Zoey’s world. She loved the man more than anything and had to just watch as he slowly left her. It’ll take time for her to grieve, but eventually she’ll hopefully find some semblance of normal. Who better to remind her of this than Joan? One of the best moments between Zoey and Joan came when Joan encouraged Zoey not to apologize for being scattered at work. Joan revealed that, when she lost her own mother, it was her work that kept her from being present at the moment her mother passed.
A Great Big World’s “You’ll Be Okay” would make for a perfect lesson for Joan to teach Zoey, while still supporting her.
7. "Senorita" by Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes
One of the best duets to come out of Season 1 of “Zoey’s” was “Bailamos” between Mo and Eddie. It was spicy and sweet and just fun to watch. And we need more. So, for round two, let’s go with Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s “Señorita”. It’s just as heated, if not more so, and perfectly captures just how strong the feelings are between Mo and Eddie.
And let’s be honest, you know Alex Newell would turn it into a power ballad.
