HBO Dominates the Competition... Again</strong></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Netflix or HBO? Netflix&hellip; or HBO? The perpetual debate of who dominates the small-screen sector of the entertainment industry may finally be over. The talent at HBO have wowed the industry this year, netting a staggering 137 nominations to Netflix&rsquo;s 117. But it doesn&rsquo;t just stop there. HBO didn&rsquo;t just obliterate the competition, it also beat out its own previous record of 126 nominations in 2015.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> HBO has come out on top a countless number of times, so why is this a big deal? Well, this win over Netflix is so extra sweet for HBO because Netflix briefly stole their title last year, when they received 112 nominations and HBO only received 108. This was the first time any network had beaten HBO in almost 20 years! It will be interesting to see how the rivalry unfolds in the future&hellip;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size:26px;"><strong>2. &quot;Game of Thrones&quot; Sets Another Record</strong></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The final season of &ldquo;Game of Thrones&rdquo; was recognized across the board, landing a whopping 32 nominations, including Best Drama and Best Directing for a Drama Series. Wow!&hellip; that&rsquo;s more nominations for a single season than any TV show ever received! And their cluster of nominations even exceeds the long-standing record set by &ldquo;NYPD Blue&rdquo;. In addition, &ldquo;Game of Thrones&rdquo; stars <strong>Kit Harrington</strong> and <strong>Emilia Clarke</strong> were nominated in lead actor categories, while <strong>Sophie Turner</strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Maisie Williams</strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Gwendoline Christie</strong>, and <strong>Lena Headey</strong> also received nominations in supporting categories.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Fun Fact: Nominee <strong>Alfie Allen</strong> was not originally submitted by HBO for consideration; instead, he got enough write-in votes to make it on to the official ballot!</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size:26px;"><strong>3. Several Series Nominee Newbies</strong></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It&rsquo;s not often that first-time nominees break in, but this year is different. This year, the Outstanding Comedy Series category has 4 first-time series nominees, including &ldquo;Fleabag&rdquo;, &ldquo;The Good Place&rdquo;, &ldquo;Russian Doll&rdquo;, and &ldquo;Schitt&rsquo;s Creek&rdquo;. It was also a pleasant surprise to see &ldquo;Bodyguard&rdquo;, &ldquo;Killing Eve&rdquo;, &ldquo;Ozark&rdquo;, &ldquo;Pose&rdquo;, and &ldquo;Succession&rdquo; as new nominees in the Drama Series categories this year.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size:26px;"><strong>4. Streaming Networks Are on the Rise</strong></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It&rsquo;s no secret that any cable and broadcast networks not named HBO are hurting, at least in the eyes of the Emmys. Meanwhile, streaming platforms only have room to grow. Yeah, Netflix lost this year to HBO; however, they still did increase their quantity of nominations this year, from 112 in 2018 to 117 in 2019. In addition, Amazon&rsquo;s Prime Video skyrocketed in their numbers, from 22 nominations in 2018 to a whopping 47 this year. They have their comedy &ldquo;The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel&rdquo; to thank for this year&rsquo;s success. The show received 20 nominations, titling it as this year&rsquo;s most-nominated comedy. Meanwhile, most cable and broadcast networks are losing strides, such as National Geographic and NBC. Both their numbers dropped this year compared to last. National Geographic received 17 Emmy nominations in 2018 and only 13 this year. Similarly, NBC received 78 nominations in 2018 and only 58 this year.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size:26px;"><strong>5. Is Diversity In the Emmys Declining?</strong></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Primetime Emmy Awards have often been praised in the past for how much more diverse they are than other awards programs; however, maybe they spoke too soon. Yes, &ldquo;Pose&rdquo; star <strong>Billy Porter</strong> was nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And yes, many great actors of color in the cast of &ldquo;When They See Us&rsquo; received nominations. But this year&rsquo;s nominations still feel like a minor set back. Particularly the comedy category nominees this year and much more heavily dominated by white actors than they have in previous years. Plus, several supporting players from &ldquo;Pose&rdquo; that should have received nominations got passed over in favor of <em>seven</em> &quot;Game of Thrones&quot; actors. Nominating one of &ldquo;Pose&rdquo;&rsquo;s strong trans actors would have been a huge notable first. Additionally, if Hulu had submitted the heavily female-led &quot;Harlots&quot; for any categories this year, that could have boosted the diversity numbers as well.
