5. Is Diversity In the Emmys Declining?
The Primetime Emmy Awards have often been praised in the past for how much more diverse they are than other awards programs; however, maybe they spoke too soon. Yes, “Pose” star Billy Porter was nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And yes, many great actors of color in the cast of “When They See Us’ received nominations. But this year’s nominations still feel like a minor set back. Particularly the comedy category nominees this year and much more heavily dominated by white actors than they have in previous years. Plus, several supporting players from “Pose” that should have received nominations got passed over in favor of seven "Game of Thrones" actors. Nominating one of “Pose”’s strong trans actors would have been a huge notable first. Additionally, if Hulu had submitted the heavily female-led "Harlots" for any categories this year, that could have boosted the diversity numbers as well. Better luck next year, maybe...
