Wyclef records song tribute to slain Martin
Rapper Wyclef Jean has recorded a new tribute song dedicated to slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
The African-American student's death at the hands of Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman in February (12) sparked outrage and protests across the U.S., with stars like Cher, Mia Farrow, Russell Simmons and Sean 'Diddy' Combs calling for the killer's arrest.
Zimmerman, 28, has since been charged with second-degree murder
and, on Friday (20Apr12), a judge placed him on $150,000 bail.
Last month (Mar12), Chaka Khan recruited celebrity friends Eric
Benet, Kelly Price and Kenny Lattimore to re-record her track Super
Life in honor of the dead teen, and now Wyclef Jean has paid
tribute to the boy with his own original tune, Justice (If You're
17) Tribute for Trayvon Martin.
Introducing the song's video to fans on Twitter.com, Jean writes,
"We need justice for Trayvon!!! This is my tribute for him".
On the track, Jean sings, "If you're seventeen, and you're wearing
a hoodie, you're on the phone, talking to your shorty, make no
mistake, there's one like you, in every city, you know the
story.
"He goin' creep up, from behind, have you leave Earth, before your
time, by the time PoPo (police) show up, he goin' say he was so
scared he shot you up."
"He could have been the next president. He could have been the next
Steve Jobs. He could have been the next astronaut. So until we get
justice, we won't stop."
Zimmerman claims he approached Martin after he spotted him acting
suspiciously while walking through his gated community. The
volunteer alleges he shot the teenager during a scuffle.
