The Hunger Games and Katy Perry were the big winners at the People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday (09Jan13), landing a slew of top honors.
The pop star stepped up to claim the Favorite Pop Artist award at the Nokia Theater and learned she had also scored the Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Music Video prizes, while her fans the KatyCats earned her the Favorite Music Fan Following trophy.
The Hunger Games cast picked up the Favorite Movie, Favorite Movie Franchise and Favorite Action Movie awards, while star Jennifer Lawrence was named Favorite Movie Actress and Favorite Face of Heroism - and her onscreen romance with Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson earned the trio the Favorite Onscreen Chemistry gong.
It was also a great night for British boy bands as One Direction and The Wanted both triumphed over their U.S. counterparts at the first big awards night of the year.
One Direction picked up the first award of the evening before the ceremony even got underway - their What Makes You Beautiful hit was announced as the Favorite Song during the pre-show red carpet event, and they went on to win the Favorite Album prize for Up All Night, while their chart rivals The Wanted beat them to become the surprise winners of the Favorite Breakout Artist trophy, also triumphing over fun. and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Stunned Max George told screaming fans at the ceremony, "This never happens to us. We've never won anything before... We never expected this at all... To win this and beat the people that we have..."
And bandmate Nathan Sykes admitted the win was a dream come true for him, adding, "Over Christmas, I was sat down with my mom and we were kind of talking: 'What do you want to do this year...?' and I said, 'The one thing I want to do is win a massive award...', so this is unbelievable."
The quintet then performed a brief a Capella version of the Starland Vocal Band's hit Afternoon Delight, which they dedicated to another People's Choice winner, comedienne and chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, for her support.
There were double wins for TV hits Glee, Castle and Grey's Anatomy, while Robert Downey, Jr. picked up awards for Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Superhero, and he took a moment to remember superfan Joyce Schroeder, who passed away "a few days ago," aged 83.
As an image of him with the elderly fan was flashed up on a huge screen behind him, the movie star said, "The love and the fanship... lives on." He then dedicated the trophy to his late devotee.
The night's highlight came when Regina King presented her Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous co-star Sandra Bullock with the People's Choice first ever Favorite Humanitarian prize.
The Oscar winner was honored with the special trophy in recognition of her philanthropic efforts, including her work with high schools in New Orleans, Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The actress embarrassed her pal King upon hitting the stage, revealing, "She just dropped the F-bomb... None of you heard it, but I did!"
She then fought back tears as she paid tribute to her "little sick boy at home" - her adopted son Louis.
