Actor/singer Jamie Foxx, Janelle Monae and R&B icons The Isley Brothers were among the honorees at the 23rd annual Trumpet Awards on Saturday night (24Jan15).
Designer Tommy Hilfiger was also feted at the Atlanta, Georgia ceremony, which celebrates the work of African-American stars and those who support the African-American community.
Monae, who was recognized for her music success, took to her Instagram.com blog after the bash to share excerpts of her acceptance speech with fans, revealing she was always determined to make her own unique mark in the world of entertainment.
In a series of posts, she wrote, "I decided through fashion and music that I would challenge the status quo and redefine what it meant to be a black female artist...
"It's not that I don't experience fear but I understand fearlessness is more important. It's not that I don't get tired but I realize standing up for those whose voices are often ignored has to come first. It's not that I don't get discouraged but I understand that working hard, being a champion for minorities and those marginalized across the world as well as opening up more doors for girls has to come first."
She also expressed her gratitude to awards founder and organiser Xernona Clayton, adding, "Home after the #trumpetawards. I am so thankful. So humbled. Lot more work. Lot more responsibility. Thank you to the legendary and incredible Xernona Clayton and everyone apart (sic) of the Trumpet Awards."
