Ed Sheeran has been confirmed as the third and final headliner for this year's (17) Glastonbury Festival, 10 days after event organiser Emily Eavis dismissed a reported line-up leak featuring the Shape of You singer.
Emily, who runs the festival with its founder, her father Michael, took to Twitter to dismiss the line-up as false, but now she has confirmed Sheeran will join Radiohead and the Foo Fighters for the weekend event in June (17) - and he'll actually close the show on Sunday (25Jun17).
Ed has never headlined the popular British festival before, but he announced his plans to do so in 2015, telling the Press Association, "The next festival I do will be headlining Glastonbury, but it just won't be next year... I want to be able to have at least three or four albums before I do it."
A photo of Sheeran performing on the bill at Glastonbury in 2011 has now appeared on the festival's official website and Eavis adds, "We’re pleased to confirm the news that Ed Sheeran will close this year’s Glastonbury Festival with a Sunday night headline set on the Pyramid Stage. Ed just announced the news on his Instagram page. This will be his only festival show of 2017.
"Ed made his Glastonbury debut in 2011 before he had released his first album, at the Croissant Neuf tent in the Green Fields. He last played at the Festival in 2014."
The singer/songwriter couldn't have timed his headline slot announcement better - he's currently number one in the U.S. and U.K. singles and albums charts, while nine of the top 10 songs in Britain this week are tracks from his new album ÷ (album).
The full festival line-up will be announced at a later date. Tickets for the 2017 Glastonbury event in Somerset have already sold out.
