Extravagant gaming booths, a whirlwind of game announcements, trailers, marketing bluster, and plenty of exhaustive performances. With nearly 70,000 attendees and millions more live-streaming, a lot happened. Here are a list of our 6 biggest takeaways of what the next year of the industry&rsquo;s mainstream is going to look like!</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>1. From the end of consoles to the dawn of streaming services, the way we play video games is changing forever.</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> For as long as we can remember, the gaming industry has been a part of a seemingly boundless cycle. Every 3-5 years, a new console is released, bringing with it its own new and exclusive games. If you want to play, you have to buy the new console. Simple as that. But it&rsquo;s 2019, and things are rarely simple nowadays.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Producers have been designing consoles that are starting to work more and more like different models of smartphones. They all have their differences, but they work essentially the same. What if you didn&rsquo;t have to buy the new console every time you wanted to try the latest games? Well, now you don&#39;t have to. More and more producers are starting to incorporate a new sales model, similar to some of your favorite TV streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Video game companies have been building their own streaming services for gamers.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A few days before the gaming expo began, Google announced more details about their own console-replacing streaming platform, which is being launched in the Fall. A monthly subscription service to their new cloud gaming service, Stadia, will allow players to use a multitude of games that players will be able access on multiple different consoles -- even on your smartphone!</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>2. The new Xbox model will be here by 2020. </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements at this year&rsquo;s E3 was that of Microsoft&rsquo;s new next-gen console, Project Scarlett. After confirming the rumors of the upcoming system at last year&rsquo;s Expo, Microsoft has finally revealed the first details of its new Xbox, which we can expect in about 16 months.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A new Scarlett launch title was also announced, and it&rsquo;s an exciting one! <em>Halo: Infinite</em> will be the first time that a <em>Halo</em> game has been a launch Xbox game since the original <em>Halo: Combat Evolved</em> for the first Xbox.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> While no development has been started, Microsoft addressed that the Project Scarlett console will not be the last Xbox console. More is to come...</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>3. Sony PlayStation was a no-show, as expected. </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> For the first time in over 2 decades, Sony, one of the 3 biggest video game console manufacturers, decided to opt out of E3 entirely, leaving the showroom floor to Microsoft and Nintendo. While they haven&rsquo;t really given a clear answer to why they decided not to attend, Sony stated that they were looking for more inventive ways to engage the community. They took the time to think differently and experiment with new ways to delights their gamers.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> So, what does that mean? Maybe they saw it as a waste of time and effort. The company has been thriving and has pulled out a massive lead in hardware sales for this console generation, but they don&rsquo;t have something huge to announce right now. It&rsquo;s not like Sony is an unknown entity in the consumer electronics industry, so maybe they decided spending all that money just to fluff itself up wasn&rsquo;t worth it this time around.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> In addition, E3 presentations usually showcase video games, and while Sony does develop some games in-house, most of their biggest releases are from third-party developers who have their individual showcases on the floor. Another factor to consider is that, with tickets being nearly $1,000, only a small fraction of the global gaming audience can attend. Sony is able to reach a much larger audience by streaming online, and they can do it at any time they want.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>4. Nintendo Switch adds more chapters to its most popular franchises.</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> While many gaming producers have hopped on the cloud streaming service bandwagon, Nintendo is just not there yet. They&rsquo;ve been creating exclusive games for their Nintendo Switch console that you can&rsquo;t play anywhere else like it&rsquo;s 2006 again.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> During Nintendo&rsquo;s presentation, they announced several upcoming games to look forward to for their Nintendo Switch console. The presentation was kicked off with a teaser trailer of <em>Luigi&rsquo;s Mansion 3</em>. Scheduled to release in 2019, the game stars Mario&rsquo;s brother Luigi as he wanders through a haunted hotel. Next, Nintendo teased the return of its popular <em>Animal Crossing</em> franchise. Taking place on a deserted island, the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive, <em>Animal Crossing: New Horizons</em>, is scheduled for release in March 2020. A return of the <em>Legend of Zelda</em> franchise was also revealed during the presentation. A sequel to the original <em>Breath of the Wild</em> is in the works. Lastly, a new game in the <em>Witcher</em> series, called <em>Wild Hunt</em>, was announced to arrive to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Originally released in 2015, <em>The Witcher</em> has earned more than 250 awards.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>5. Safe choices dominate the mainstream.</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The ideas expressed in this year&rsquo;s press conferences were mostly safe and uncontroversial, and predictable choices prevailed over originality. The bulk of attention was directed toward the creation of sequels as well as revivals, such as the resurrections of older series such as <em>Baldur&#39;s Gate III</em>, <em>Final Fantasy VII Remake</em>, <em>Shenmue III</em>, and <em>Commander Keen</em>. In addition, games like <em>DOOM: Eternal</em>, <em>Chivalry 2</em>, <em>Watch Dogs Legion</em>, <em>Wolfenstein: Young Blood</em>, and <em>Dying Light 2</em> were all announced; however, they focus on themes and ideas that we&rsquo;ve already seen before.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Even a new Avengers game was announced, which is hardly an original, compelling idea. It feels like the industry is focusing on trademark maintenance rather than taking advantage of game-makers&rsquo; creativity.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <hr class="system-pagebreak" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>6. But there are still some original ideas to look forward to. </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> While sequels and revivals of games clearly commanded the conferences, there were still some original game ideas that were thrown at us. <em>Ghostwire: Tokyo</em>, <em>Outriders: Way to the Woods</em>, and <em>Deathloop</em> are a few of the original games that were announced. There is also a collaboration between <em>A Song of Ice and Fire</em> author <strong>George R.R. Martin</strong> and <strong>Hidetaka Miyazaki </strong>coming soon called <em>Elden Ring. </em></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> What was your favorite part of E3?</div>" } ]]></script>
