Women, it is our great moment. Today's Wonder Woman triumphs at the cinema and in the music scene. There have always been singers who have broken with the stereotype of a fragile woman in life and have defined the empowered woman. In recent years, this trend has only become stronger. The list is long, with the great Beyoncé among those leading the charge. In 2011, New York Magazine described her as "a kind of a monster -- aggressive and intense and committed."
The #MeToo movement became a worldwide tsunami, and we especially saw it in the music industry, where women's songs were about the triumphant and independent women able to lead their own lives. Meanwhile, Shakira released her feminist anthem, "Soltera", and Katy Perry released her latest album, 143, featuring the song "Woman's World": "Sexy, confident, so intelligent, she is heaven-sent," she sings.
Since 2018, when the #MeToo movement became a feminist revolution, many women have dominated the music scene. Some of the other songs that have left a footprint include 2019's "God is a Woman" by Ariana Grande.
Then there's "The Man" (2019) by Taylor Swift, where the woman pretends that everything would be successful and easy if she were a man.
And then comes Ava Max with "Kings and Queens" (2020), which, according to the singer, is inspired by Daenerys Targaryen from "Games of Thrones"-- "Oh, no damsel in distress, don't need to save me," she sings.
Lady Gaga made another feminist song in 2021, "Free Woman", with a powerful message about overcoming and survival. She explained that the song was the start of overcoming sexual assault: "I was sexually assaulted by a music producer. It's compounded all of my feelings about life, feelings about the world, feelings about the industry, what I had to compromise and go through to get to where I am. I had to put it there. And when I was able to finally celebrate it, I said, 'You know what?' ... I'm no longer going to define myself as a 'survivor' or a victim of sexual assault. I am just a person who is free that went through some f***ed up s**t."
Finally, we can't forget 2023's "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus, inspired by her breakup with Liam Hemsworth.
Strong songs for the empowered woman of our time. Sexy, powerful, independent, proud, and unique. Like all of us.
