It’s been 2 days since J.J. Abrams and the cast of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker dropped some new footage on a few thousand fans at D23 Expo this weekend, but I am still aching from all the screaming and general flailing. Ever since I laid eyes on it in Hall D23 of the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday, I have been drooling in anticipation for Lucasfilm to release the footage online so that I could savor and (over)analyze every last damn frame. Finally, the time has come! FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS PUPPY:
Catch me in the back row having a full-on episode (apologies to all the people sitting next to and behind me)…
Okay, so there’s A LOT to process here. First and foremost, let’s back it up to April of this year when the very first teaser trailer for the final installment of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy dropped at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago – in that bit of footage, we learned perhaps the biggest game-changer of this story, and that is that the infamous Emperor Palpatine – AKA Darth Sidious – has seemingly survived after being yeeted into an abyss by Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi nearly 40 years ago. Yes, the bastard who started this WHOLE DAMN MESS by turning young Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side is back to finish his insidious business with the beleaguered family. What exactly that will entail is anyone’s guess at this point, but we seem to have more clues now thanks to the D23 footage.
Let’s break this down, shall we?
