Whether you’ve heard of them or not, Lawrence are far from new to the music scene. After releasing their 4th studio album in June, Family Business, they performed on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon". The clips of them performing went viral online. People are dying to know who this band is and how they’ve gone so long without being avid listeners.
@lawrencetheband Happy Miss Congeniality Day! Fun fact: our dad wrote the movie, and Clyde wrote the theme song :) #shesbeautyshesgrace #misscongeniality ♬ original sound - Lawrence
The pair grew up in the entertainment industry, starring in their father’s films and composing music for some. Gracie performed on Broadway in 2009, starring in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs. She has also appeared in several television shows and films with and without her father. Clyde has composed music for his father’s films since 2007, including the film Music & Lyrics. His most recent work is the 2019 film Noelle.
The siblings attended Brown University, where Clyde met 7 of the 8 band members. The band was originally called The Clyde Lawrence Band, as Gracie was still in high school when the band formed. Clyde graduated in 2015, and Gracie was set to graduate in 2020 but left school to play with the band full-time. By this time, the band had changed its name to to Lawrence.
The band released their debut album Breakfast in 2016, which reached #6 on the iTunes R&B charts the day it was released. Their sophomore album Living Room began to put them on the map as the band started to be featured on Spotify’s playlists. In July 2021, the group released Hotel TV, which put them in the limelight. The record’s lead single, "Don’t Lose Sight", was featured in a Microsoft commercial, causing the single to reach #33 on the Top 40. The song's success earned the band the opportunity to play on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert".
In 2023, the band toured alongside the Jonas Brothers, opening for their shows and exposing them to massive crowds and new fans. After completing the tour, they opened for none other than the Rolling Stones at MetLife Stadium in May of this year. Shortly after, they released their fourth record, Family Business.
What sets this group apart is not just their sound but something about them and their stage presence that catches your eye and demands your full attention. Their music is a mix of R&B, funk, and rock. Using Gracie’s strong vocals with the incredibly unique production earns them a true spot in the R&B genre. The group pays homage to past R&B and soul-pop artists while creating something new and different.
Lawrence recently received more attention after their performance on "The Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon", where they performed their hit song, "Whatcha Want." Clips of their performance were posted to TikTok, where the comments were filled with people expressing excitement about finding an artist they hadn’t heard of before and others praising the band for finally receiving the recognition they deserved.
If you’re not a Lawrence fan after seeing their rockstar performance on "The Tonight Show", listen to The Family Business and note how you feel afterward. You might find yourself getting tickets to one of their upcoming tour dates.
