Genre-Bending
The Star Wars franchise is kind of a genre in and of itself – what Lucas has referred to as a “space fairy tale”. It’s not exactly sci-fi, but it’s not exactly fantasy either. And because it’s never really played by the rules in the first place, there’s always room to introduce other influences into it. In the case of “The Mandalorian”, the aspects of being a “space western” is very observable – more specifically, it has the flavor of a Spaghetti Western, which in itself was inspired by old samurai movies, which you can feel hints of as well. From the dusty landscapes and shootouts to the twangy-yet-spacey soundtrack, it’s an intriguing blend of genres that can appeal to multiple demographics.
