3. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir
Jóhanna is a politician from Iceland who was the former Prime Minister of the country. She held that position from 2009 until 2013, becoming Iceland’s first female Prime Minister, and the world’s first openly LGBT head of government! During her term, she worked on fixing the Icelandic financial crisis, along with a huge push for reworking the Constitution, and made big moves towards improving women’s rights. In 2010, same-sex marriage was legalized in Iceland, and Jóhanna, with her partner Jonina, became one of the first same-sex married couples in the country.
She has been an influential person in Iceland politics for decades, and has been a member of their parliament, Althing, since 1978, being re-elected eight times in a row. In 2012, after serving for so long, she announced that she would be retiring. I mean, when you work for so long with no real competition, I bet it gets a little boring. At the time of her retirement, she was Iceland’s longest serving member of Parliament.
