R&B newcomer Khalid still cannot believe he has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, because simply attending the prizegiving was just a dream three years ago.
The Young Dumb & Broke singer will be one of the artists to watch at the 2018 ceremony after landing nods for Best New Artist, Best R&B Song for Location, and Best Urban Contemporary Album for his debut, American Teen, as well as Song of the Year and Best Music Video for his collaboration with rapper Logic and singer Alessia Cara on 1-800-273-8255.
"This year has most absolutely been one big whirlwind," Khalid told news show Entertainment Tonight. "I try to take all of my experiences in and not take anything for granted. It's really hard for me to pick and choose highlights because everything has been so incredible!"
The recognition from officials at The Recording Academy, the voters behind the Grammys, is even more astounding for the 19-year-old, full name Khalid Donnel Robinson, because back in 2014, he had expressed a desire to grace the event's red carpet on Twitter: "I want to go to the Grammys one day," he wrote.
Khalid reposted the tweet after receiving his 2018 nominations in late November (17), but the star is still in awe at his huge success almost three weeks after the nominees were announced.
"It definitely has not sunk in yet. I don't know if it ever will," he gushed. "This journey so far has been truly amazing, and I'm so grateful to have this platform to share my art and who I am as an individual. To be recognized and accepted by my musical peers is truly an honor."
Khalid is planning to take his mother as his date to the prestigious awards show on 28 January (18) as a way of saying thank you for inspiring him to become a musician.
"I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for my mom," he explained of Sergeant First Class Linda Wolfe, who sang in the U.S. Army band until her retirement earlier this year (17). "The moment is going to be unforgettable for the both of us, and I wouldn't want anyone else by my side."
