Ruby Rose has hit back at trolls who slammed the star for making her Hurricane Harvey relief effort donation to a LGBT center in Houston, Texas.
The 31-year-old actress, most famous for her roles in TV show Orange Is the New Black and film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, announced on Wednesday (30Aug17) that she was going to give $10,000 to The Montrose Center, whose mission it is to "empower our community, primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families, to enjoy healthier and more fulfilling lives".
However, after making the donation, Ruby found herself at the center of criticism by those who accused her of solely helping the LGBT community rather than Houston locals on a larger scale.
"So you are only willing to help out gay people suffering from the floods in Houston?!?! You are a disgusting human being," one wrote, while another added, "Hopefully your donations would be going to help everyone down there in need and not just the LGBT community there. People are people right?"
Ruby clapped back to the remarks in a lengthy post on her Instagram page on Wednesday night, writing: "It is one of the most inclusive organizations I can think of. It is not as though they check how gay you are on entry."
She also shared screenshots of the comments surrounding the nature of the center's mission, and explained: "I don't agree with the wording or personal attacks but I can understand the confusion if you are not aware of what these centers do. The LGBT center does not just help LGBT members in a crisis like, it does not discriminate (against) people in need based on gender, sexuality, race or religion."
"Unfortunately many organizations have in the past denied entry to people based on the above, however I am extremely proud to hear how Texans have joined forces in such a beautiful, heartwarming way."
The star, who is in a relationship with The Veronicas star Jessica Origliasso, concluded that while she normally prefers to donate to causes anonymously, she had decided to go public with her Hurricane Harvey donation in a bid to encourage others to follow her lead.
"Days ago I did donate to an animal organization helping over there too, truthfully I just don’t post everything I do as it’s not really about that… this was a unique situation as the benefit in creating awareness to the center out weighed the usual criticism of ‘is that all you donated’ or ‘why gay people’ or ‘attention seeker’ etc. it’s far more rewarding to donate anonymously by a long mile," she finished.
