Country music legend Ralph Stanley has been honored for his career achievements with an induction into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The 87-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member added another accolade to his name on Saturday (11Oct14) when he was formally inducted as a fellow of the prestigious honorary society that recognizes achievement in the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Also included in the same induction class was actor/director Al Pacino, author John Irving, and oceanographer and discoverer of the Titanic, Robert Ballard.

Stanley will finish his 14-month farewell The Man of Constant Sorrow Tour in December (14).

He has been performing for 67 years - the bluegrass icon started out as one half of the Stanley Brothers with his older sibling Carter, and went solo after his brother died in 1966.
