Nick Jonas has his manager to thank for his deeply personal new album, because he urged him to mine his 2015 break-up from Olivia Culpo for new material.
Jonas tells Essential Homme magazine he was already working on new material when he and Culpo split last summer (15), and he admits there was a moment he didn't know what to do next.
Revealing the break-up "changed everything", the 23-year-old singer says, "I remember my manager looked at me and said, 'Alright, you really have to dig deep, it’s important that you get honest, vulnerable, and lay out your stories in the best way you can', so I did.
"The record really became about this year of my life, and that's not limited to any one event or anything specifically that happened, but, you know, everything. There are some tough moments and there are some great ones."
Since splitting from beauty queen-turned-TV personality Culpo, Jonas has been linked to actress' Kate Hudson and Lily Collins, and recently sounded off about reports suggesting he's the reason for tour mate Demi Lovato's break-up with Wilmer Valderrama.
"Demi's one of my closest friends, we're like family and I also love Will to death," he told Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday night (14Jun16). "We've become very close in the last couple years, so not true (I broke them up)."
Meanwhile, looking past the release of his new album, Last Year Was Complicated, Nick is already working on a wish list of people he'd like to work with on his next project.
"Drake is just awesome," he says. "I love Kanye a lot as well. Those two had really great albums this year. I’d love to work with them."
