Glee star Kevin Mchale knew the hit show lost its magic after co-star Cory Monteith suddenly died in 2013.
McHale and his co-stars wrapped a six-season run of the Golden Globe-winning musical comedy series earlier this year (15), and while rumours of a spin-off featuring Lea Michele surfaced, the actor insists there won't be any more Glee in the near future.
During an interview with HuffPost Live on Friday (01May15), McHale doubted fans would tune in for another installment of the show, and admitted the programme declined after the sudden death of Monteith the summer before the start of Glee's fifth season.
McHale said, "Towards the end, there weren't that many people watching Glee. So I don't know how many people would then watch a spin-off. We're off the air for a reason.
"I will say, not to bring it down or anything, when Cory Monteith died (was a turning point). I don't think the show ever came back from that. It wasn't for a lack of trying, but the story was going in one direction with his character and he was one of two main characters of the show...
"I think after that the vibe on set was different. It was just weird for us being there never mind actually having to be filming. Being one of the writers in that sort of situation - I wouldn't have known what I would have done because I was like, 'I don't really even want to be here.'"
Glee creator Ryan Murphy reportedly put the fate of the show in Monteith's then-girlfriend Michele's hands, giving her the ultimate decision on whether or not it would go on.
Monteith, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, Canada after ingesting a toxic combination of heroin and alcohol. The writers and cast paid tribute to him and his onscreen character Finn Hudson in the March (15) series finale, which featured some of his best moments shown in flashbacks.
