So BB, you're going to look to this camera. You're just going to say, "Hi, I'm BB Wood from The New Normal."
Where exactly is the camera? Right here. I'll point to her. Oh, that's weird. That's cool. Hi, my name is BB Wood. I'm on The New Normal. And I'm here getting schooled in history lessons, impressions. Gosh, what else did you teach me?
I've taught you the box. And how to pose like a model?
Yes. Don't smile, right? Don't smile.
Nikki Novak here at Young Hollywood with the adorable BB Wood who stars as the sassy Shania Clemmons on NBC's The New Normal. Welcome, BB.
Thank you.
Great to have you here.
Thank you.
Uh, you just told me a little story about what you did on your way over here. You read a comic book?
I did. I love Marvel. Marvel Comics is my favorite. Yeah. Yeah, I started boxing because of The Avengers movie.
So you're taking boxing?
Yes, I am. It's really fun.
Can you teach me any boxing moves?
Yeah, so, um, put your hands
Okay.
like this. Then you want to turn your hand out, kind of like that.
What's the name of that? Like that's like a
Um, I don't really know.
A jab? A jab. Somebody's telling us it's a jab. So, like, uh
Have you used it on anybody yet? On your co-stars on The New Normal?
Um, no, not yet. But Justin Bartha wants to take classes with me.
He does?
Yes.
Who do you think's tougher between the two of you?
Me.
Would you say you're similar to your character because
Yeah, I would say so.
Do you have a deep-fried jewelry line?
I do not. But But I have a line called Broadway BB Boutique. Uh-huh. And our event is in, um, January. Every year's kind of like a different theme. Last year's was '80s, and this year is kind of like a 1920s, like more refined look. And all the like profits go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
That's very grown up. Oh, give me like a little maybe one piece from your '20s line. How do you come up with a piece from a '20s line? How do you even know about the '20s?
Well, I watched Downton Abbey, and that's like my favorite show. Okay. One of my close friends, who's actually went to my old school, she, um, is starting her own like custom dresses line. So I kind of tell her what I'd like and then she sews it. But I do know how to sew after that. So I'm actually going to a sewing class.
You take a lot of classes. I do. From boxing to sewing, you have a wide wide range.
Yes, I want to try everything.
So I knew your character has her own bucket list.
Yes.
What's on your bucket list? Because you're so old and
Well, I'd like to go to Paris. Okay. And I'd like to go to Fashion Week in Paris.
Who would you like to meet there?
Anna Wintour.
Oh, Anna Wintour. Yes. I thought you were gonna say like Justin Bieber or like something like that. But no, Anna Wintour.
She actually sent me a letter when I was in Vogue. So I was like, oh my gosh. I was like freaking out.
Wait, hold the phone. You've been in Vogue. This is my dream. Do you realize, BB, my dream is to be in Vogue and I've not been in Vogue. And you've been in Vogue. How did that happen?
Well, it's kind of uncomfortable the way they pose you. Oh, sure. Cuz it's like like really weird. You're like trying to Like, and it's just a really weird pose. But it's really fun. I was And it with the whole cast, so we're all like It was in a a outside a sound stage. So I was on a ladder like posing like this. I try not to smile because we're like 'Cause you have to be a model and you have to do that. Yeah. We are all just doing like poses trying to be our best at it.
So I know on the show, because you just did a great model impression, you do a lot of impressions and you did like a great Cher impression.
I do. Thank you.
Can you teach me how to Cuz she does something with her mouth. Like how did you sort of do that? Like Can you give me a little lesson?
Well, I watched all the Sonny & Cher shows before. I only had two days to work on it. So I was freaking out. I got really stressed. I was like, how do I do this? I just didn't really know how to speak like her.
You didn't know how to speak Cher?
Yes. It's like a language. You kind of have to put your mouth in like an "ooh" shape. You have to like kind of make it longer like all your syllables. Like, if there's two, make it like three. It's it's weird.
Okay, show me.
Um, my name is Cher.
My name is Cher. Yeah, that's pretty good. That's really good. Yes. Now, we just need black wigs and we'll be absolutely fine. Yes. Can you do any other impressions?
Um, I do Edie Beale.
Oh, great. From Grey Gardens. Can I see?
Yeah. You always have to put your hand on your hip like that. Kind of like up and then you wanna go, "Oh, hi, thank heaven you're here. You look absolutely terrific, honestly. By the way, no one would make me come out in a kimono, so quite a fi." Like, like kind of draw out everything.
Thank you. That is fantastic. Thank you. So, have you had a ton of fun shooting this show?
Yeah, it's so much fun. Ryan Murphy, my goodness.
So, what was it like when you auditioned and how did you get how did you sort of get the job?
Well, I actually lived in New York at the time, so I, um, went to tape on it and then my agent, um, sent it to Los Angeles. And then, um, I didn't actually meet with anybody until we filmed the pilot in April. It was a weird auditioning process.
So, what is what is sort of like, because the show is The New Normal, what is sort of like the most abnormal thing you've seen about Hollywood since you've been here or not normal?
The traffic. Cuz you probably drive, too. You're probably allowed to have a driver's license cuz you're so mature.
I actually at Disneyland got my driver's license at Autopia. So, I feel so insignificant at this point. The girl's been in Vogue. She can do me like she can put me to shame with the impressions. What else do you have in your little bag of tricks?
Well, um, I like Colonial Williamsburg.
Well, yes, cuz I know so much about that, too. So, tell me what how is it that you're into Colonial Williamsburg?
Well, I don't really remember. I think I, um,
When you when you when your mom gave birth to you, basically, you were reading about Colonial Williamsburg.
Yes, I yes. I go and I dress up in accurate clothing. So when, um, I did it on the episode, I was in a pilgrim outfit. I gave wardrobe so much grief because it was not accurate. And I was just like
It wasn't historically accurate.
It was not right about it. It was black. Okay. And the costume said pioneer apron. Pioneer is like 100 years later than Colonial Times.
And then you got married on the show in a very non-traditional dress.
Yes.
Was that your design, too? Did you tell wardrobe that was they had it all Did they put you in a white dress and you told them it was all wrong?
No, I did not. Ryan wrote that. It was all his idea, but, um, it was fun. I liked I liked getting married.
Now, if you tell me you're married, I'm gonna be really upset. Are you?
No, I'm not.
Some things can wait till you get a little bit older, right? Before we go out, are those real prescription glasses? Cuz I know you have
Yes, they are. I can't see anything. I can't really see close, I can't really see far. I have to kind of wink and to see things. So I can see like around the room like Young Hollywood, but not really, it's kind of blurry.
And there you go.
