Scott Michael Foster on Playing 'Frozen' Character in "Once Upon a Time"

I'm Oliver Trevena joined in the Young Hollywood studio with this handsome guy. It's got Michael Foster. How are you?

I'm great.

And you've got three names. I mean, we've all got three names, but you're known for your three names. You what's your middle name?

Charles.

Charles. Yeah. It's got a good ring to it. Yeah, maybe I should roll with that. Yeah, see, that's I and it's mine are three first names.

Now you're just showing off.

All right. Well, I didn't want to I didn't want to bring it up, but you kind of brought it out of me.

Well, there you go. There you go.

But more exciting than your name right now, is Kristoff. Right. This this is a huge deal.

Yeah. I mean, it really is exciting. The biggest I if Frozen was the biggest highest grossing animation of all time. Yeah, absolutely. It's very exciting. I mean, when this when this came around, I had an opportunity to really impress my nieces and nephews by by for once. Yeah. I know. This is the first time. It's the first time. Yeah. So no, it's extremely exciting and you know, I'm I'm rocking the

You've got the new hair. The the Kristoff hair. You've got the Kristoff.

Yeah. I mean, it's a little different style than his, but it's the same color. So.

great hair, though. You can pull it off.

You can pull it off. You're You really love you here. I can't wear hats like you, but I can definitely do.

Well, I'm wearing hats because I don't have hair like it.

Oh, I don't believe that. So, it all goes full circle. Look at that. It's a bit of a bromance going on. I've got a little crush on this guy. Um, is this the first time you've dyed your hair?

Yeah, this is well, for yeah, for a part. I mean, I'm back in, you know, eighth grade. We used to get the the highlights. But yeah.

You used to go to the the cap that you put around your head and you pull the hair through and Then the foil.

Exactly. Yeah, it was excruciating. But you know, you did anything for fashion, so.

We should bring that back.

You know what? Maybe you are. It knows. Yeah. Who knows? Yeah.

Um, and how is it going into a role that's that's, you know, got such a big name behind it? Um, is it pressure or you would more excitement?

Well, um, I mean, you know, obviously, there are people who know the Frozen story really well. And so there is that pressure to do, you know, that they that you want to be able to do the character just justice, but you also want to kind of create it, uh, as your own at the same time and make your own unique choices. And that's what I'm trying to do and I hope people, you know, like what they see.

You you are always working now. This is a good this is a good thing. And you mentioned the traveling because obviously chasing life is LA. Yeah. Um, and then once upon a time Vancouver. Right, right.

Yeah. So, I go I kind of go, you know, um, you know, I go back and forth between episodes of of Once Upon a Time. So I'm doing a lot of flying back and forth. And um I haven't gone to Boston for chasing life, but if that happens, you know, I'll be.

You'll be there, too. Right. And then, uh, so, uh, yeah, it's fun. It's It's for air miles.

Yeah. No, I yeah. I've I've got I've I think Delta, I've got like I'm silver medallion just from flying Delta, which is which is Not to show off or anything, but, um.

Three names, silver medallion. I'm going to leave here in tears. I've got nothing. I've got nothing. Um, but how is it working on a show like Once Upon a Time? It's it's an amazing cast. Yeah. And so many interesting characters that, you know, must just be weird when you're on set and there's this there and Snow White and whoever else.

It's actually been really cool, you know, because, you know, it's not just the Frozen story line over all. And every year, they add new, you know, fairy tale stories to the, uh, to the show. So, you know, we've got, uh, you know, you've got Hook and Robin Hood. And so, there's a whole amalgamation of fairy tales.

Yes. Yeah. Big Brits on the show.

Exactly.

Oh, yeah. You got you got tons of you got tons of Brits. Um, and it's just, uh, I don't know, it's cool because all already as an actor, when you're on a show, you're you're playing, but this is even more like more fun. More fun because you're playing fairy tales you grew up with, you know? Which is cool.

Right. And you obviously, you had seen the movie before this even came up. Before you were.

Like I mentioned, I've got nieces and nephews and

So you've seen this.

I'd seen it a couple times, uh, you know, I went home for Christmas last year and that was it was all the it was all the talk between the kids. So, I I definitely had seen it a couple times. Sung the song a few times. I mean, I might know a couple of I'm not singing them for you, but I might know.

I wasn't going to bring that on you. I wasn't going to let. I just thought I'd I'd squash that right now. Even though you showed off with the whole name thing, I wasn't going to. You know, I just that's my one show off. I wasn't going to do it. I was And the last thing I'll do is let you sing now as well.

Oh, really? Please don't do that. It's it's not going to happen.

If you could play any animation character, the role of any animation character, ever. I know it's a big question. That's a big Answer it very carefully. Question.

Well, I was going to say, I think what I liked about, um, Frozen was that it kind of reminded me of the early 90s animated movies like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, you know, those are the ones that I grew up on. And so, I mean, I Definitely the best soundtrack. I I I know all the songs, too. I know, yeah. Um, but, uh, I mean, it would be hard to play the genie, I think, but I would play or or Aladdin. I love Aladdin. That was the one I grew up with, you know. I love the Aladdin.

You'd have to go back to your original hair. I want to go

Exactly. Go a little darker. That would have been a smart fit. They could have saved on the on the bleach and everything. Exactly. Just They lost. They don't know.

Um, and Chasing Life, Leo, tell us about the role on that as well.

Right. Well, Leo is, uh, um, uh, son of a gubernatorial candidate. Um, so he's a little bit of a a rich kid, but he's got um brain tumor. And he struggles with that. But his whole philosophy is live life to the fullest. And he kind of helps April out to um, you know, think the same way.

Right. Yeah. Such a different role. It is. to Kristoff. Very different. It's Almost completely opposite. You couldn't yeah. You couldn't write it. Couldn't be further from the

Yeah.

Um, is it tough like when you have to jump from or you kind of nailed that by now?

Um, well, I mean, honestly, it worked out where, uh, I kind of I kind of ended shooting Chasing Life before I started with Once Upon a Time. But, uh, you know, it's like to go from a character like that and then go into fairy tale land where you're wearing clothes that, you know, I would never wear. Um, just at the weekend. Yeah. Well, and time. Apparently, that's what they've been telling me. Unless Halloween comes, you know, Halloween comes around, might wear something like that. Um, but, uh, no, it's cool. It's I I actually I would rather play a bunch of completely different diverse characters than be typecast as one guy the whole time.

So The Pact 2, horror movie coming out September 5th on, uh, on demand. And then October, it'll be in some theaters. Yeah, exactly. This is exciting. It's very big.

Um, I I I'm pumped for people to see this one. It was, uh, I mean, it's I've never done a horror film before. So this was exciting for me. Um,

Are you a horror movie fan?

You know, I was when I was younger, like I really liked going with my friends in high school to go see the big horror flick, you know? And I liked getting scared. Now I don't like getting scared anymore. I watch a horror movie now by myself and I can't help but think that everything I saw in the movie is going to happen to me that night. Right. Right. You know, even stuff that's like paranormal and fantastically impossible. I still think it's going to happen to me.

You never know. And you just wrapped My Dead Boyfriend. Right. Yeah.

Yep.

Sounds like a rom-com.

Yeah. It's a it's a real It's it's gosh. Um, it was uh it was a lot of fun to shoot. I got to say that because I got to work with, uh, Anthony Edwards again who was um

He directed in your old coach.

Exactly. Yeah, exactly. So, I worked with him before and he was directing, which I was really honored that he asked me to do it. And, um, who wouldn't want to work opposite Heather Graham, which was, uh, it was a really fun shoot. I I think the movie will I haven't seen it yet, but I I I think it'll be good.

Right. You know? Well, the one we are excited for, we're excited for them all, but September 28th, Once Upon a Time. Exactly. Kristoff.
