Cubby's like the secret kind of the secret squirrel that comes out like from behind and like takes all your money when you're not expecting it. I just said psycho with your money at the end, because the secret squirrel from behind just started. I'm all here at the Young Hollywood Studio. We foster the people. Pumped up Kicks, small jam that seems to be blowing up everywhere. Foster the People: Pumped Up Kicks is just one of those things, you know, it's a song, you know, we wrote the song and and and uh put it on our website and I don't know, two weeks later it just kinda started spreading around.

So when I first listened to it, I thought, oh great, pumped up kicks, it's Reebok pumps and stuff like that. But you listen to it and you're all a bit dark and weird, aren't you? Foster the People: A little bit yeah.

Tell us the uh, for people that haven't listened to it enough and just danced to it, without listening to the lyrics, the story behind it. Foster the People: Well, it's kinda about a, you know, teenage kid that's uh, kinda losing his mind and he's in this fantasy world where he's uh, in this fantasy world filled of violence.

So you were tapping into someone else's head, it wasn't your head, in fact. Foster the People: Yeah, well, yeah.

You you're not the disturbing kid with a gun. Foster the People: No.

Great. Security. It's all okay, you can leave now. You can leave. I was kinda worried. Oh god, that was He's an actor, isn't he, as well? Can tell he's been in Hollywood. Now, torches, your your first album that's just dropped, that's exciting. Do you all write or is it just? Foster the People: Uh, I wrote I wrote like most of the stuff and then I'll kinda I'll bring it into these guys and we'll um, kinda just deconstruct the songs and you know, I like to kinda write in a cave with uh, you know, just all the doors and windows shut and all the sunlight blocked out. Um, Second guest: He's that kid. Don't let him fool you.

Um, and I I was reading the background, you're you've done quite strange odd jobs, didn't you? Foster the People: Yeah, I used to actually deliver cheese to Larry King.

Nice. Like slices of cheese. Like he actually he would order six to eight slices of cheese. Foster the People: Okay. That's all. That was probably Yeah, like literally I would take it in a little container.

And obviously this cafe didn't make you sign a confidentiality agreement. Foster the People: No.

Okay. Foster the People: One of the coolest odd jobs I've ever had was um working for an a hot air balloon company.

That's very cool. Foster the People: We actually like set up the balloon, flew it, chased it, brought it down, the whole whole deal and stuff.

You you done jingles then, right? Foster the People: Yeah, I was I was composing uh, for for commercials and stuff. Bank of America. Um, like jingle like they weren't really jingles jingles. Well, I guess Muscle Milk, I don't know if you ever know what that is.

Oh I almost I know what it is. Look at me. I did the stuff for Muscle Milk. Oh you did How's that jingle? Foster the People: I don't know. I actually don't know it. It's cool. It's kinda like it's kinda dark and and weird actually.

Once again, who would have thought? But Mark Foster making a dark and weird song. Who lived with a pimp? I did notice that. Did one of you Or not live with a pimp, but in the same block. In the same block. Foster the People: I didn't I didn't live with a pimp, but there was a pimp that came over the house that I lived in.

How much more interesting was my version? Foster the People: I That's why I gotta clear it up. Just go with it. Yeah, I know it's it's just one of those things in Hollywood, you know, It's like I I was like 19 years old and and just lived in this house with a bunch of, you know, up and coming kinda crazy artists and there was just a lot of seedy people that would come over and hang out.

And how did you guys meet? I don't know. How did you form this? Foster the People: I was I was going to like a like an acting school and um, one of one of the guys that went there, that was like a buddy of mine, was roommates with Cubby and so that's how I met Cubby and so you know, we were hanging out for for a couple years before we started the band and you know, just playing poker at his house, he had this like, that's how you used to throw the poker nights, right? Second guest: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Do you still play poker? Second guest: Yeah.

Do you are you joining in as well? Foster the People: You know, I'm not really a big poker player, they're trying to teach me.

Don't let him pull you to their dark side. Carry on doing what you're doing, the dancing and all that, is fine. Don't need to play poker. Who's the best out of you two? Who's taking home the winnings? Foster the People: Kinda gone back and forth. Cubby's like Cubby's like the secret kinda the secret squirrel that comes out like from behind and like takes all your money when you're not expecting it.

Second guest: Because seriously, cuz I I've had a couple poker nights at my house in the last couple months and like and and and I was in the lead both times just like huge chip stack and by the end of it I mean Cubby only had like this many chips left. should should have been really easy to just put him out and he just crapped up and like and he and he took all my money. So.

Sneaky Cubby. Comes out of anywhere, like a ninja. Second guest: Like a squirrel.

Like a squirrel. I would've thrown out you out. I thought ninja was a lot cooler than squirrel, but if you want squirrel, it's yours. Just put on ninja. Okay. Second guest: A squirrell ninja.
