'November Man' Star Luke Bracey on Spiders, Bagpipes, and Dad Jokes

About this video
Aussie actor Luke Bracey pays a visit to the YH Studio to fill us in on his hectic (in a good way!) film schedule and the diverse projects he has in the pipeline, including the action thriller 'The November Man' (starring James Bond himself, Pierce Brosnan), the Nicholas Sparks romance 'The Best of Me', and the remake of 'Point Break', which sees him stepping into the iconic Keanu Reeves role! He also tells us about his tenuous relationship with the spiders in his native land, his bagpipe-playing abilities, and he regales us with some hilariously awkward "dad jokes"!

Welcome. Good to have you here.
Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Um all the way from Australia, well not really. You've been here for a while now, haven't you?
Uh yeah, a little bit, but I'm kind of I bounce over kind of every which way. I always go home for Christmas and New Year for like five weeks.
Okay, so random question just because we were sort of talking about this in the green room before we started rolling. What's the biggest spider you've ever seen being an Aussie?
Oh, yeah, we've got some ones called Huntsman and the worst one was uh they're kind of gray and black. This one time I woke up in the morning and got into my shower and I turn the shower on and kind of warms up a bit and then I open my eyes and on the black and gray wall right there was one about that big and I kind of almost slipped over, got the shampoo bottle and just smashed it. It was it was you didn't have to. I got to this point in my life where I kind of accepted that spiders are there and all that they do is kill the mosquitos and flies that annoy me. So we I think we have an understanding now spiders and I. Um I leave them be and they leave me be.
Random fact I learned about you. You play the bagpipes? Which I don't think of when I think of Australia.
Yeah, and I I I do know how to play the bagpipes. Haven't picked them up for a while, but I learned it's I learned at school.
Well because they're so useful, you need them all the time in life.
Well, that's it. I mean when you need someone strangling a cat, that sound effect you're gonna get me to play the bagpipes. You can do a Hollywood sound effect.
So, wait. So how did this come about that you learned to play them?
I it's the school I went to. The school I went to was uh kind of Scottish heritage.
Don't mind go commando. Like when they wear those the kilts.
We call it regimental.
Oh, is that what you call it?
That's what we call it.
Is that the Australian version of it? Regimental. Really?
Yes, yes. And I go so many places with that but I won't. I won't. It is it's kind of tradition that your first parade that you play outside of school is uh It's regimental. It's regimental. No one really checks. It's more of an honor system. Right. But uh but you're only cheating yourself.
Okay, so let's talk. You've got a lot of movies. We got a lot of movies to get to.
Yeah, yeah, my head's kinda spinning. I'm wondering which one we should start with.
Let's start with November Man. The November Man. All right, yeah. Pierce Brosnan. Yeah. I want to know like the first day on set working with him because this is like a CIA kind of action movie. First day you sit on I mean this is this is James Bond. This is fully.
I was fully aware of that fact. It's just so burnt into your into your brain and and and he was my Bond that I grew up with, but but this movie's really different. He's a bit harder and a bit dirtier and uh not as polished, so to speak.
Right. So you went from that to then going to do a really romantic movie. Nicholas Sparks. Yeah. And I feel like um going from that into like a romantic type of movie. I mean this is fantastic because you a lot of actors get pigeonholed into playing one specific type of role.
Yeah, I I think I've been very lucky with it. Yeah. Um I mean it was so to do November Man was such a thrill and and then I went home for a couple weeks over Christmas and New Year and came back and was lucky enough to to to get Best of Me, which was just another completely different thing obviously and and something as you said, as an actor, that's what you want to be able to do to try and make uh a bunch of different movies and tell some different stories and play some different characters and yeah, it's definitely two extremes. That's for sure.
Okay, so the best we know it's going to be there's gonna be romance. Plenty of it. There's gonna be a lot of a lot of love scenes. A lot of acting.
Yeah, there's plenty of uh there's plenty of all of it really. There's love, there's hate, there's anger, there's you know, remorse, there's all those things.
And there's going to be tears if it's Nicholas Sparks, for sure.
It's going to be tears, there's gonna be kissing in the rain. There's gonna be slow dancing, there's gonna be fighting, there's gonna be kind of all that you can imagine rolled up into one and and yeah, it's a pretty uh pretty uh high stakes uh romance that these two get into.
Forget being in the rain and the Nicholas Spark. Yeah. You're going to be getting wet for Point Break, Break 2.
Yeah, yeah, I get to go surfing.
We are always dousing you with water.
Yeah, I don't mind it. I grew up by the beach. I like the surfing, right?
So this is a perfect role for you. So this is a remake of Point Break, famous movie.
Yeah. Full reboot of it. Um we're kind of taking it out of California and just a surfing culture and kind of reappropriating it to the world of extreme sports. Snowboarding, motocross, rock climbing, wingsuiting. Um surfing as well. Um kind of all these crazy extreme sports.
Yeah. Um You terrified me at wingsuiting. Yeah. Because I've seen that. Did you say you actually have to do it? Are you going to be doing all of this?
You need about 15 years of base jumping experience before you even start to get your size for a wingsuit. I think before you even start doing that stuff, we've what we've got, we we want to be so truthful to all these extreme sports and and and treat them with the respect that they deserve because they are all extremely dangerous and the athletes that do them are phenomenal and some of the best in the world. And so we've actually got the best surfers, snowboarders, rock climbers, uh motocross riders, uh wingsuiters doing these stunts. So uh we're trying to trying to be as truthful and as authentic and as and as honest and respectful to them as possible.
So We have a game for you.
Oh really?
Yes. Um we a little bird told us sort of where you're going to be traveling to. So based on each um location I hope you wrote it down because it's plenty of places.
Well, I haven't written down here.
We have some trivia for you to see how well you know your geography. How you geography.
All right. I don't mind. I don't mind my geography and geography and I.
We'll we're gonna put you to the test. So the first you're I don't know what order you're going to go, but you're going to Berlin. Yes. Okay, so this is a multiple choice question. Are you ready?
Okay. I was born ready.
All right. What food item was invented in Berlin? Bratwurst, falafel, or currywurst?
Uh well, bratwurst I'd have to go with it, but who knows with new modern influences, maybe they thought currywurst. I'm going to say bratwurst.
Is it currywurst?
Currywurst.
Currywurst?
I thought that was uh well, it's a wurst of some description.
There you go. I'll give you a half a point for that one. Austria, you're going to Austria as well. Which Hollywood actor grew up as an Austrian citizen? This is not multiple choice.
Who's the honest one, is it?
That would be correct. Fantastic. You got a point. All right, next one. Italy, in what part of Italy was pizza invented? And this is not multiple choice.
In what part of Italy was pizza invented? I mean, this is tough. You got the leaning tower of Pisa. It's spelled differently. But it sounds like pizza. Uh why not just say go for the completely obvious? Pizza.
I'm going to give you a hint. It kinda sounds like a woman's body part.
Naples. That's a man's body part as well.
Oh, right. This is what happens to me when I make up things on the spot. This is why I don't come up with the games. I'm now blushing. Moving on. What is the most popular Venezuela is the next place. What is the most popular sport in Venezuela? I'm not giving you any more hints after that last one.
Oh, what's that sport with they've got like an a thing they hold on their arm and they swing the the balls and it's like the fastest ball sport in the world. What's called?
It's close. Like baseball. Like baseball or something?
Not like baseball. Or is it just baseball?
It is baseball.
It is baseball. There we go. Good. Fantastic.
Okay, next. This is embarrassing. I'm doing poorly.
You're embarrassed. You're the one that said Naples. I said only women have them.
Okay, what colors make up the Swiss flag? This is Switzerland. You will be attending Switzerland as well. This is I actually have a really My favorite joke is about this.
Oh really?
Actually, it's red and white.
Yes. And my favorite one of my favorite jokes. It's a it's a very very lame dad joke. Um but it's one of my favorites. Uh what is the best thing about living in Switzerland?
That people have Naples?
No, the flag's a big plus. That is my dad joke.
That's so my kinda humor. I love it. I love it, I love it. I'm in many moons to come when I have kids, they are just gonna hate my dad jokes because I'm gonna have them lined up. I'm spending the next 20 years of my life. Coming up with dad jokes just to embarrass my kids when I have them.
So, I'm just just make sure no one counted the score there. We're just gonna pretend that there was no score. That was just friendly. Just for fun, wasn't it? That was just Fantastic. That was just. I will give you a perfect score if you tell me one more dad joke before we go.
Oh, okay. Let me think. Let me think, let me think. Um what is brown and sticky?
Peanut butter?
A stick.
Oh! Oh my God. You're so awesome. Thank you for coming in.
No, thank you very much. I appreciate it. Thanks for having me. We can. We didn't do the Edgar Ramirez. Thank you for having me. Case number two, at young Hollywood, he's gonna work with Edgar. I kissed him, too. Whatever. You'll get. Justify however you want to justify it. I'll take it.
