RJ here and here at the Young Hollywood Studio with Liz Fair. Now, we love people that, you know, are innovative and like experimenting with technology and the internet and with this new album you did just that. You released the entire thing on the internet.

Liz Phair

It's fun. I mean, for me, I think a lot of this stuff, you just follow the technology. like whatever you can do, you do do.

Young Hollywood

So, how did it work that that it was out there? How soon did you see the back?

Liz Phair

It's really nice, actually. It was a way to kind of ramp up to getting, you know, used to working again cuz I had taken a couple years off and it got everyone, you know, talking. They're like, wow, what has she done? What has she done? Which is never bad.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. Yeah, we we gotta talk. I was listening to it all morning. Bollywood. I mean, that's. You the first time you're like, what is this? But then it like gets in your head and then like you like you get into it.

Liz Phair

Yeah, I get messages from friends that just leave one lyric from the song on my machine. They're just like, they're like Which track did I mean? Well, one of them, another woman my age is like, oh shit, shit, 20 years old, still hot, but getting a lot colder.

Young Hollywood

You're bobbing, I mean, you're like essentially rapping in that sense. So it's a little bit different. like here you are getting a rapper.

Liz Phair

I know, I was getting a lot of like Joaquin Phoenix type references. like, are you rapping now? literally, I'm joking. I'm joking.

Young Hollywood

Are we sure you're joking?

Liz Phair

I'm joking. I don't know, I might rap again, but no, I'm not like at home freestyle. I'm not gonna be out at the clubs. No. I was joking.

Young Hollywood

Are you gonna do anything now with that technology to tie it into into the tour?

Liz Phair

Not this tour, but yeah, I mean, hey, I would like to bring Bollywood to the stage. I would like the backup dancers. I'd like to be like, what's you're looking at my portfolio. I'm ready. And then Funi Style is gonna be coming out soon. It's all hot new packaging and it's got a bonus disk of my Girly Sound tapes, which were these bedroom tapes that I made, like literally that created Guyville.

Young Hollywood

Let's just talk about, you know, what you're doing in your downtime because you know, you'll do an album and then you'll you'll sort of disappear for a little bit

Liz Phair

Well, check this out. I'm just learning how to surf.

Young Hollywood

You mentioned that. So so it's new for you the surfing.

Liz Phair

It's totally new and I've been three blocks from the beach for the last 10 years and I swim all the time and I've been boogie boarding, but for some reason I was really intimidated. Even though I would watch them longingly. I'd be like, they make it look so easy. Why don't I do that? And I picked what was it like the coldest record the coldest summer on record. No. This summer in LA.

Young Hollywood

And that's when you got in the water.

Liz Phair

Yeah. So I'm I'm it's like Seattle and it's sleeting and I'm like, Right. But it's still, I love being in the ocean so much. So I'm into that.

Young Hollywood

So the last thing we wanna know and, you know, something we talked to about everyone. A lot of people out there wanna make it in the music business and, you know, a lot of people are one hit wonders. They disappear. You're one of the few longevity. You've been doing this a long, long time. What's the key to longevity, you think?

Liz Phair

The key to longevity. Okay. First and foremost, be mostly sober. Like a lot of people fall the wayside because they just get stuck in bad habits. Maybe they have substance problem. Plus, you know, you can't listen to everybody around you. No one has the answer for you. You have to have a strong sense of why you're making art and what it is that you love about it so that you can continue to pursue and renew, you know, your interest and passion for it.
