This film centers around Penny Cooper (Carson Meyer), a teenage girl who struggles with her feelings for a musician who moves to her town (Jackson White), and her boyfriend, Johnny Sanders Jr. (Centineo). A common theme among Centineo’s Netflix films is that he plays the perfect date/boyfriend, and there’s no exception in this film. Sanders Jr. is the super understanding, caring, chiseled surfer boyfriend of Cooper. This film is deeper than typical teenage drama/romance films and deals with themes such as identity, making the most out of life, and finding out what and who you love.
