Beyonce's baby is big news as Perry, Gaga & Spears double up at the VMAs

It was ladies night at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (28Aug11) as Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga took home two honors apiece, but it was a pregnant Beyonce who stole the show.

The pop superstar chose the glitzy Los Angeles prizegiving to announce her baby news to the world and, without actually winning an honor, she became the night's big talking point.

Otherwise, Lady Gaga left many onlookers puzzled by refusing to come out of character as her foul-mouthed male alter-ego Jo Calderone for the entire ceremony - even accepting her Best Female Video award as him, and Russell Brand served up a brutally honest tribute to tragic star Amy Winehouse, revealing he once wrote her off as a "crazy" woman who wandered around their native London stinking of "the booze" until he heard her sing.

His wife Perry, who had 10 videos up for prizes, took home two, including the Video of the Year for Firework, but she lost the Best Pop Video honor to Spears, who also landed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The list of winners is:

Best Video with a Message - Born This Way by Lady Gaga

Best Pop Video - Till The World Ends by Britney Spears

Best Rock Video - Walk by Foo Fighters

Best Hip-Hop Video - Super Bass by Nicki Minaj

Best Collaboration - E.T. by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West

Best Male Video - U Smile by Justin Bieber

Best New Artist - Tyler, The Creator

Best Female Video - Born This Way by Lady Gaga

Video of the Year - Firework by Katy Perry

Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award - Britney Spears.
